Medical Care in Prison

Testimonial From a Former Inmate

You wrote about medical care in prison? What, are you nuts? There ain’t any!!! I remember severely spraining my ankle… Yeah I know you told me not to play sports, but I did. It was very difficult to get into bed. I mean “Up” to bed. Yes, I had an upper bunk, was on crutches and that brilliant PA told me not to put any weight on the leg. I asked medical for a lower bunk pass and they looked at me as if I was psychotic. Do you know what it was like having to urinate in the middle of the night? You can’t put a foot on the lower bunk, that’s a prison no-no. Nor is it OK to shake the bed…that could get you killed. Especially with my sadistic bunkie. I had to place the working leg on my locker, then reposition and place the working leg on a chair and then, with my toes, search the floor for my flip-flops. You don’t want your bare feet on that floor…no way/no how! The process took almost five minutes every night Do you know what their standard medical treatment is? Ibuprophen. Broken leg? Ibuprophen Bed-bug bite? Ibuprophen Sexually transmitted disease? Ibuprophen Flu? Ibuprophen Back pain? You got it…Ibuprophen Constipated? Yup…Ibuprophen Anthrax? Bubonic Plague, Cholera, Dandruff, Swine Flu? “Shut up and stop whining. Here’s 40, 800mg Ibuprophen pills.” They dispense that stuff like candy and don’t care a lick if it burns a hole in your stomach. I really enjoyed reading this piece about medical care in prison. I guess it’s because I now have a great appreciation for Walgreen’s and CVS. I’m putting my dentist in my will because I’m so grateful that he pushed me to have work done before I surrendered. I’ll never take my HMO for granted ever again. And I forgot about that Samoan. OUCH! Will he ever walk straight again? How in the world did you remember that jogger who was hit by the truck driven by that midget guard? I remember them standing over him yelling to get up. He was in real pain. That guard thought she smelled better than any of her “fellow” inmates. Yeah, she was no better than us; at least we eventually went home. Great piece. Wish I’d known this before I surrendered. Should be required reading for anyone going to prison. Paul Levine, Criminal Defense Law Center
